What is Forehead Reduction?

Forehead reduction, also known as hairline lowering surgery, is a procedure designed to reduce the height of the forehead by repositioning the hairline. By carefully advancing the scalp, the procedure helps create better balance between facial features and improve overall proportions.

Each treatment is tailored to your hairline, facial structure and individual goals to ensure natural-looking results.

You may consider forehead reduction if:

  • You feel your forehead appears high or disproportionate
  • Your hairline affects facial balance or confidence
  • You have a naturally high hairline rather than hair loss
  • You are seeking a permanent hairline-lowering solution

The Procedure

Your surgeon will evaluate your hairline, scalp flexibility, and overall facial structure to develop a personalised plan. They’ll use advanced techniques to create a natural hairline that complements your features.

A precise incision is made along your natural hairline, ensuring any scarring remains discreet and easily hidden within the hair.

The scalp is carefully shifted forward to lower the forehead height, and any excess skin from the upper forehead is removed.

The repositioned scalp is securely anchored in place with sutures to provide a stable and long-lasting result.

The incision is meticulously closed with fine sutures to encourage smooth healing and minimise visible scarring. The entire procedure usually takes about 2-3 hours, depending on your specific needs and goals.

The amount the hairline can be lowered depends on factors like: Scalp laxity, Facial proportions, Hair density Your surgeon will assess your scalp mobility and suggest a realistic hairline position that improves balance without compromising natural anatomy.

Yes. Forehead reduction is often safely combined with procedures such as brow lift, hair transplant, or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Combining treatments can enhance overall facial harmony and reduce total recovery time, depending on your suitability.

Scarring is usually minimal. The incision is carefully placed along the natural hairline, so once healed, the scar is well concealed within the hair and fades significantly over time.

Forehead reduction surgery is generally not painful during the procedure as it is performed under anaesthesia. After surgery, patients may experience mild to moderate discomfort, tightness, or swelling, which is well controlled with prescribed pain medication and typically improves within a few days.

Key considerations before surgery

Type of Anaesthesia

Forehead reduction surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring you are fully comfortable throughout the procedure. In some cases, anaesthesia options may vary depending on individual needs and the surgical plan. Your surgeon and anaesthetist will discuss the most appropriate option with you during your consultation.

Aftercare Requirements

Following forehead reduction surgery, some swelling, tightness and mild discomfort are normal in the early stages and gradually settle over time. You’ll be advised to keep your head elevated, avoid strenuous activity, and care gently for the incision along the hairline. Detailed aftercare instructions and follow-up appointments will be provided, and our team remains available to support you throughout your recovery.

Back to Work (Recovery)

Most patients experience some swelling and tightness in the early stages, which gradually settles over the following weeks. Many feel comfortable returning to desk-based or light work within 10–14 days, depending on individual healing and comfort levels. Your surgeon will advise you on when it is safe to resume normal activities based on your recovery.
