Areas Commonly Treated

Liposuction can be used to target one or multiple areas of the body, including:

Abdomen and waist

Liposuction of the abdomen and waist is one of the most common procedures and is used to remove stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise. This treatment helps create a flatter stomach and a more defined waistline. By contouring the midsection, liposuction enhances overall body proportions while maintaining natural-looking results when combined with a healthy lifestyle.

Hips and flanks

Liposuction of the hips and flanks, commonly known as love handles, helps eliminate excess fat that can affect body shape and clothing fit. This procedure smooths the sides of the waist and creates a more sculpted silhouette. It is especially effective for individuals who are close to their ideal weight but struggle with localized fat in these areas.

Thighs (inner and outer)

Thigh liposuction targets excess fat from the inner and outer thighs to improve leg contour and reduce friction or rubbing. Inner thigh liposuction creates a thigh gap and smoother leg shape, while outer thigh treatment helps reduce saddlebag appearance. The result is slimmer, more proportionate legs that complement the rest of the body.

Arms

Arm liposuction focuses on removing stubborn fat from the upper arms, particularly the area between the shoulder and elbow. This procedure helps reduce the bulky or sagging appearance of arms and improves definition. It is ideal for patients who have good skin elasticity and want more toned arms without extensive surgical lifting.

Back

Back liposuction addresses fat deposits in areas such as the upper back, lower back, and bra-line region. These fat pockets can be difficult to eliminate through exercise alone. Liposuction helps smooth the back, reduce bulges, and improve how clothing fits, creating a more balanced and streamlined body contour from all angles.

Chest (including male chest contouring)

Chest liposuction is commonly used for male chest contouring, especially in cases of excess fatty tissue. The procedure helps flatten and firm the chest, creating a more masculine appearance. It may be combined with gland removal if needed. This treatment boosts confidence by improving chest shape and allowing patients to feel more comfortable in fitted clothing.

Chin and neck

Chin and neck liposuction targets excess fat beneath the chin and along the jawline to reduce the appearance of a double chin. This procedure enhances facial definition and creates a sharper, more youthful profile. It is minimally invasive and can significantly improve facial balance with relatively quick recovery and long-lasting results.

Treatment Journey

1. Consultation & Planning

Your surgeon will assess the areas of concern, discuss your goals, review your medical history, and explain what liposuction can realistically achieve. A bespoke treatment plan is created, defining the areas to be treated, the volume of fat removal, and the sculpting approach required for balanced results.

2. The Surgical Procedure

The aim of liposuction is to remove stubborn fat. It is performed by inserting a cannula into the skin. Subcutaneous fat is then sucked out through a tube, in small amounts, until the desired amount is reached. A typical procedure can reduce the size of the treated area by 1-3 cms. Although liposuction can be used alongside other body contouring procedures, it’s not often recommended as a solution for removing large amounts of excess fat. Effective results can produce a slimmer look to the concerning area, which can last for the long term if a healthy and active lifestyle is maintained.

3. Aftercare Requirements

In some cases, a compression garment is required and your surgeon will recommend how long to wear this for. You can often feel a little stiff and tender after liposuction, and a course of pain relief may help to ease this. Full results may take up to 6 weeks to develop, allowing for any bruising and swelling to subside.

4. Recovery & Healing

Recovery depends on the extent of treatment, but most patients can expect some swelling and bruising in the early days, followed by gradual improvement as swelling subsides. Many are able to return to light activities within a short period, with continued refinement of body contours over the following weeks. Compression garments are typically worn to support healing and help optimise final results, and ongoing aftercare support is provided throughout your recovery.

What results can I expect?

Liposuction produces a more defined, contoured appearance, with results becoming increasingly visible as swelling reduces over the following weeks. Once healed, results are usually long-lasting, provided a stable weight and healthy lifestyle are maintained.

Incisions are small and strategically placed, resulting in minimal scarring that typically fades and becomes barely noticeable over time.

Liposuction has an immediate effect in fat volume reduction due to the removal of fat cells. It also creates internal scarring, which helps the skin contract and adapt to the new body contour. This secondary tightening effect becomes more noticeable around three months after the procedure. The final result depends on factors such as skin elasticity, age, and individual healing response.

The results of liposuction are long-lasting, as the removed fat cells do not grow back. However, maintaining a stable weight is essential to preserve the outcome. If significant weight gain occurs, remaining fat cells can enlarge and affect the contour. A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and regular exercise help maintain the sculpted results for many years.

Fat transfer is a procedure in which fat removed through liposuction is purified and injected into another area of the body, such as the face, breasts, or buttocks, to add volume and improve shape. Some of the transferred fat is naturally absorbed by the body, but the fat that survives establishes a permanent blood supply and remains long term.

Yes, most patients require some time off work after liposuction. For desk-based or light work, 3 to 7 days of rest is usually sufficient. Physically demanding jobs may require up to 2 weeks. Mild swelling, bruising, and soreness are common initially, but these symptoms gradually improve as the body heals and recovers.
